Kanal D was founded by Ayhan Şahenk and Aydın Doğan in 1993. Kanal D Euro (Euro D) was launched in 1996. Kanal D Romania started running in 2007. Demirören Grup purchased Kanal D, along with the other media assets of the Doğan Media Group on March 21, 2018.

Ayhan Şahenk: He founded Dogus Holding in 1975 which operates in finance, automotive, construction, media, tourism, energy, real estate, food and retail sectors. Şahenk became a shareholder with Aydın Doğan for DTV Haber ve Görsel Yayıncılık (Kanal D) in 1993. He transfered his shares to Doğan Group in 1995. Aydın Doğan: He is the founder and honorary chairperson of Doğan Holding. He founded his first industrial company in 1974. He became a publisher with the acquisition of Milliyet in 1979 and later on Hürriyet in 1994. He established Aydın Doğan Foundation in 1996. He was hit by a record $2.5bn tax fine, sending its shares down 20 percent after a year-long confrontation with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Tevfik Kınık was born in 1977 in Bingöl. He is a graduate of Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences. In 1999, he became an assistant specialist at the capital markets board (CMB). After leaving the CMB Vice-President position in 2016, he moved to the private sector and worked for Aktif Bank, a part of Çalık Group.
Kınık became the CEO of Demirören Holding in 2019.
