Business Interests: Holdings, Investments and Public Tenders

Among the shareholders of companies that own the top 40 media outlets, most are businesspeople. The six conglomerates they own (Doğuş, Demirören, Albayrak, Ciner, Kalyon, İhlas Groups) operate in sectors such as construction, energy, mining, tourism, telecommunications.

The groups (Doğuş, Demirören, Ciner, Albayrak, Kalyon and İhlas companies) that own other major businesses publish more than half of the top 40 media outlets compiled by MOM according to their audience shares. 

Among the top 40 media outlets, they own 7 newspapers: Hürriyet, Posta and Milliyet belong to Demirören Group (3), Sabah and Takvim belong to Kalyon (2), Yeni Şafak is owned by Albayrak (1), Türkiye is owned by İhlas Group (1).

Among the top 10 TVs, they own 5 TVs: ATV and A Haber belong to Kalyon Group (2), Ciner (1) owns Show TV, Demirören (1) owns Kanal D, Doğuş (1) owns Star TV.

Regarding the radios, 5 radios belong to these groups: Kral FM and NTV Radio belong to Doğuş (2); Radyo D belongs to Demirören (1), A Haber Radyo belongs to Turkuvaz Media (Kalyon Group) (1), Ciner (1) owns Habertürk.

5 of the digital news portals on the top 10 belong to the Demirören (2) (hurriyet.com.tr, milliyet.com.tr), Ciner (1) (haberturk.com.tr), Kalyon (2) (sabah.com.tr, takvim.com.tr).

Some of them, such as the Albayrak Group, Kalyon Group, İhlas Group and Doğuş Group, have won major public tenders in the past few years, ranging from the third airport of İstanbul to metro construction and urban redevelopment projects on a neighborhood scale.

Türk Medya Group, whose owner Zeki Yeşildağ is in close relations with the ruling AKP and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is active only in the media sector. The group’s Akşam newspaper is included in the MOM 2020 updates.

Fikret Tayfun Demirören, Yıldırım Demirören and Meltem Oktay now control the group, which owns businesses in media, manufacturing, shopping malls, real estate, port management, construction, education and tourism sectors. The group bought a building that was owned by the General Directorate of Foundations, turning it into “Demirören Shopping Mall” on İstanbul's Istiklal Avenue. Kalyon Construction is one of the companies getting the highest numbers of tenders from the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality. In the 9-year period of 2010-2018, the amount of money paid by the Municipality to the company was nearly 6 billion 700 million TRY. The media outlets of Es Yayıncılık were previously following the rhetoric of and political line of the ruling AKP. Meanwhile, the group is also handling the construction of Trabzon and Mogadishu ports; waste collection activities in İstanbul, Ankara, Şanlıurfa, Gaziantep and Kocaeli; as well as the meter readings of İstanbul Water and Sewerage Administration (İSKİ), Turkish Electricity Distribution Corporation (TEDAŞ), İstanbul Gas Distribution Company. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was Nuri Albayrak's daughter's wedding witness in 2002 and attended his son's engagement ceremony in 2012.

The group owns 25 companies across the country. The holding's shares began trading on Borsa Istanbul in 2010. The group won a public tender in 2013 for the construction of 4,500 units as part of a controversial redevelopment project in İstanbul's Gaziosmanpaşa district; for the wireless wide area network and secure Internet connection of İstanbul's Bağcılar district; for the poly-metal mines in Salihli and Bayındır; as well as Elbistan lignite mine and thermal power plant.

According to the 2021 first quarterly operating report of the group, İhlas Group owns 23.96 percent of the İhlas Yayın Holding’s shares. 78.79 percent of İhlas Group’s shares are open to the public.
