Kalyon Group

Kalyon Group

It was founded by Ömer Faruk Kalyoncu, board member of Kalyon Group, in 2013. Kalyon Group operates in construction, energy and infrastructure sectors.

Turkuvaz Medya Yayın Hizmetleri A.Ş., which is the media company under Kalyon Group and Zirve Holding, has the capital of 39.982.829 Turkish Liras (with the decrees in the capital in 2021).

Çalık Holding was founded by Çalık Holding A.Ş (58%), Çalık Turizm Kültür İnşaat Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. (25%), Gapyapı İnşaat A.Ş. (15%), Ahmet Çalık (1%) and Serhat Albayrak (the brother of Erdoğan's son-in-law Berat Albayrak) (1%). Turkuvaz Medya owned by Zirve Holding is owned 100% by Ömer Faruk Kalyoncu.

In 2004, then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was a witness in Ömer Faruk Kalyoncu's wedding. Former President Abdullah Gül and former AKP ministers Abdülkadir Aksu, Recep Akdağ, Hüseyin Çelik, Cemil Çiçek, Hilmi Güler, Zeki Ergezen, Sami Güçlü and Osman Pepe were also among guests in the wedding.

According to the leaked tapes, then Prime Minister Erdoğan himself organized the sale of media outlets that belonged to Calik Holding, to businessmen close to the government and these businesspeople were promised to get tenders for public projects in return. According to these tapes, the current Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım was responsible for the funding by various businesspeople so that Kalyon Group could buy the media outlets.

Haluk Kalyoncu (the son of Hasan Kalyoncu, the founder of the Kalyon Group) and Yelda Demirören (the daughter of Yıldırım Demirören, the Chair of the Board of Directors of Demirören Holding) got married on April 13, 2019. President Erdoğan and his wife Emine Erdoğan were the marriage witnesses. The marriage was reported as the company marriage of Turkuvaz and Demirören Groups.

Demirören Group shut down the Yaysat (the Publication Company of Demirören) on October 31, 2018. Thus, the publishing company of Turkuvaz Media, owned by Kalyon Group, became a monopoly in the sector.

Kalyon Holding is among the top 10 companies in the world to receive public tenders.

Some channels such as ATV, A Haber news channel, A Spor and A News were labelled by YouTube as "Turkuvaz Media Group is funded in whole or in part by the Turkish government” in August 2021 (it removed the label after some time).

Among the board members of the New Art Foundation, which was allegedly founded after it was ordered by President Erdoğan in November 2020, are Presidential spokesperson  İbrahim Kalın, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Ahmet Misbah Demircan, and Kalyon İnşaat board member Mehmet Kalyoncu.

Meta Data

Shareholder information in public records, albeit available, necessitates some research skills and, thus, is not made easy for the general public to access. In order to find the names of shareholders and their percentage of shares, the search engines of Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (İTO) and the Trade Registry Gazette have to be used simultaneously, for İTO summarizes the contents of each record while the Trade Registry Gazette doesn’t. However, the İTO database only lists companies established in Istanbul, which makes the search for companies not based in Istanbul very challenging. So, for instance, in order to find a record on shares of a company that is not based in Istanbul, one would have to go through all the PDFs of the records for that company, one by one, which may result in up to 50 or more documents to be reviewed before the right information is located.

It is claimed that Azerbaijan signed contracts with Turkey after the war started against Armenia in September 2020, and the Kalyon Group is among the companies that signed these contracts.
